WHAT IS “STEEPNESS”?
Suppose each of these lines represent the steepness of two different sets of stairs, as illustrated below.
If we take one step at a time, the ratio of our vertical movement to our horizontal movement would be,
Notice that it would be the same if we took two steps at a time:
The important discovery here is that the of any line is essentially its identity.
The technical term for steepness is Slope.
Now we just need a way of quantifying the slope.
